Omega-6:3 ratio
The human body has evolved on a diet with a ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFA+DHA) of approximately 1:1, this is also when modern science has proved that the body is working optimally.
Our modern diets are deficient in omega-3 fatty acids and have excessive amounts of omega-6 fatty acids compared with the diet on which human beings evolved and their genetic patterns were established. The normal Western diets have a ratio averaging out at 16.7:1 and the results we have from our over 250,000 customers show that here in the US the average ratio is closer to 25:1
Excessive amounts of omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) promote the pathogenesis of many diseases, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, and inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, whereas increased levels of omega-3 PUFA (resulting in lower omega-6/omega-3 ratio) exert suppressive effects.
In cardiovascular disease, a ratio of 4:1 was associated with a 70% decrease in total mortality. A ratio of 2.5:1 reduced rectal cell proliferation in patients with colorectal cancer. A lower omega-6:3 in women with breast cancer was associated with decreased mortality risk. A ratio of 2-3:1 suppressed inflammation in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and a ratio of 5:1 had a beneficial effect on patients with asthma.
A lower ratio of omega-6/omega-3 fatty acids is more desirable in reducing the risk of many of the chronic diseases of high prevalence in Western societies
The natural Omega-6:3 ratio according to our genes is below 3:1. When Omega-3 fatty acids make up more than 8% of all fatty acids, your Omega-6:3 Balance will be 3:1 or lower.
Omega-3 Index
The Omega-3 Index test is simply a measure of the amount of EPA and DHA in the blood, specifically the red blood cell membranes. For example, if you have 64 fatty acids in a cell membrane and 6 are EPA and DHA, then you would have an Omega-3 Index of 9.2%. The BalanceTest will tell you how much Omega-3 your blood contains.
The level of Omega-3 you should aim to be above is 8%, preferably 10-12%. The daily requirement of marine Omega-3’s EPA and DHA is dependent on body weight. Adults weighing 150lbs need to consume approximately 3000mg of Omega-3’s (EPA + DHA) daily to get their Omega-3 level above 8%.
